I have been reporting on the small business market for many years, and I’ve witnessed the growth and evolution of the industry. In a recent conversation with Christine Telyan, the founder of UENI, a website-building company, I explored the value and necessity of having a website for small businesses. Telyan emphasized that having a website is imperative in today’s business landscape. While social media and online marketplaces can drive traffic and brand awareness, they do not replace the value of having your own website. A website provides you with control over your online content and ensures that potential customers can easily find you.

When considering the essential elements of a small business website, Telyan highlighted three key aspects: user experience, clear calls to action, and information architecture. These elements are crucial for engaging visitors, encouraging them to take action, and optimizing search engine visibility.

In terms of cost, creating a website for your business can vary depending on the complexity and functionality required. DIY website builders can cost between $20 to $50 per month, but hiring a web designer or agency involves a higher upfront investment. However, the long-term benefits of having a well-designed website far outweigh the initial costs.

When it comes to website design and content, Telyan emphasized the importance of usability, visual appeal, and relevant content. It’s essential to keep loading times under two seconds, avoid generic stock images, and prioritize mobile responsiveness. Content should clearly articulate your business offerings, showcase your expertise, and include relevant keywords for search engine optimization.

Incorporating SEO best practices into your website design is crucial for driving organic traffic and increasing visibility in search engine results pages (SERPs). Telyan explained that SEO focuses on relevance and authority, emphasizing the importance of well-structured content, backlinks, and optimized website code.

Measuring site performance is also critical for understanding the impact of your website on customer engagement and sales. Tracking user behavior and actions taken on the website provides valuable insights into the effectiveness of your online presence. Overall, having a website can significantly impact your business’s overall pipeline of customers, inquiries, and sales.

In conclusion, having a website for your small business is no longer just an option—it’s a necessity. With the right elements, design, content, and SEO practices, your website can serve as a powerful tool for engaging potential customers and driving business growth.
